The Season of Muck and Mud

1              Spring has come to the north once again, oh joy!
The rains bring great gobs of mud and muck around.
                Dirt roadways become impassable quagmires.
Shoes are sucked right of the horses feet in pasture.
5              Gray skies flourish as clouds keep rolling on by.
But suddenly everything is turning green,
Flowers burst through the muck in startling color.

The truck is sunk up to its’ axles in the mud.
Spring has come to the north once again, oh joy!
10           Call the wrecker to come jerk the truck out,
Only to have the driver snicker and laugh.
His tow-truck isn’t big enough to pull you out.
You’re stuck there for a while longer until they come
With the mammoth tractor-like wrecker to pop you out.

15           The horses are kept inside for days on end,
They great a little crazy from lack of exercise.
Spring has come to the north once again, oh joy!
They dash outside on the first non-raining day
Slipping on the grease-like mud that was pasture.
20           Coming back in from their mud-bath at the spa
Looking like tar-babies with all the muck stuck.

Gray skies never seem to go away, always clouds.
Depression from the bleakness sets in deeply.
Longing for sunshine becomes more urgent by the minute.
25           Spring has come to the north once again, oh joy!
And just when you think you can stand no more . . . sun!
Blue skies become more common every day
While the clouds just pass overhead, but don’t stay.

One day you look out and see buds on the trees.
30           You know soon they will become the greenest leaves.
You check every day for the first signs,
The anticipation is hard to fight down.
Spring has come to the north once again, oh joy!
Overnight every tree has become green.
35           When did this recurring miracle take place?

As the roads dry up and the days start to lengthen
Green filaments begin their push to the surface
Daffodil and crocus shoot out like fireworks
Suddenly bursting forth from the brown, mucky ground.
40           Color starts its’ rampage all around the town.
Spring has come to the north once again, oh joy!
42           Spirits rise as the song birds return to the skies.
